The Maldives have a very easy visa policy, and everybody gets a free 30-day visa on arrival, with a valid travel document, a return ticket and proof of sufficient funds to cover the duration of the stay. This can be extended in to 90 days on request provided your staying in Male’. See Department of immigration and Emigration Website for more details.


Importing alcohol, pork or pornography (every broadly defined) into the Maldives is forbidden and all luggage is X-Rayed on arrival. On the way out, note that exporting sand or seashells is also forbidden.

The major airport is the Male’ International Aiport (IATA:MLE, ICAO:VRMM), located on Hulhule’ Island a 10 minute boat ride from the capital Male’. The airport is served by a wide range of flights to and from india, Sri Lanka, Dubai, and major airports in South-East Asia, as well as an increasing number of charters from Europe. Many flights stop in Colombo (Sri Lanka) on the way.

Recently Gan Airport (IATA:GAN, ICAO:VRMG), on the southern atoll of Addu started serving flights from Milan number of times a week.

By Boat

There are no regular passenger boats to the Maldives. While sometimes yachts and cruise ships come to the Maldives, they usualy steer clear, as navigating around the reefs is difficult and permits are expensive.
