January to March is normally the northeast monsoon’s drier period. Your best travel dates still depend on the island and activity; no month guarantees calm seas or wildlife sightings.

Two monsoons, several island conditions

The Maldives Meteorological Service describes the northeast monsoon from January to March and the southwest monsoon from mid-May to November, with December and April as transition periods. Rainfall varies across northern, central and southern atolls. Use this as climate context, not a day-by-day forecast.

January to March

This is the normally drier monsoon period, and a useful starting point if your priority is time outdoors. Rain and rough seas remain possible. Confirm excursions with the operator for your actual island and dates rather than assuming a booking can operate because it falls in the dry season.

April and December

The meteorological service identifies these as transitional months. Build a flexible itinerary, especially if you have a seaplane or a separate boat connection. Compare your arrival time, accommodation check-in and onward transport before booking independent services.

Mid-May to November

The southwest monsoon normally brings more rain. This does not mean every day is wet, but your plans should allow for changes to boat routes and outdoor activities. The climate page describes rain often occurring in showers with sunny periods in between.

Check the week, then the day

Check current notices from the Maldives Meteorological Service and confirm the sea conditions with your operator. A forecast centered on Malé cannot describe every atoll equally. Keep the operator’s cancellation policy and transfer rules beside your itinerary.
